That sick feeling
Work today was a experience that I never want to have again. What makes it worse is that I will probably have the same experience several times throughout my life.
We had to lay off two really cool employees. Somehow I
knew that something like this was going to happen after the news that we lost one of out major customers.
I felt all knotted up inside when I saw their manager go over to their desks to deliver the bad news and supervise their departure. I don't know why their departure affected me the way it did, and I feel terrible for thinking up ways we could repurpose their desktop machines. Still, they are gone, and not because of anything that they did. Something about that offends my sense of fairness. Life isn't fair, but that unfair? I hope that they don't have too much trouble finding employment. They shouldn't since they were pretty good techs.
David W and I were recently chatting about the new Star Wars movie, the philosophy of Star Wars in particular.
We spent some time discussing the difference between the Sith and Jedi approach to emotions.
This got me thinking back to a quote from Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith.
Obi-Wan tells Anakin that “Only a Sith deals in Absolutes.”
‘Only’ is a rather strong absolute.
So Obi-Wan is a Sith (obviously false) or he is confused. Alternatively, the Star Wars script writers need a course in logic.
Anakin made a comment that “If you’re not with me, you’re my enemy.” The previous quote was Obi-Wan's response. I have not given Anakin's comment much though, but it lacks self-contradiction which is always a plus.
The whole exchange feels like a
political cheapshot, but I'm not willing to go there right now. All that needs to be said has been said
elsewhere.
