Jon's Notes
First Flight
Thanks to a co–worker, I have experienced flight!
I was given a ride back to Hartford from a field office in N80968, a
Piper Warrior II.
So much for that idea
I'm using
Apple Automator and iCal as my alarm clock.
It has no problem doing some simple text to speech and then playing a iTunes playlist, but reading
Technorati query pages chokes up my iBook.
Is anyone else sick of the odd apple iCaps?
Weekend
This past weekend was intense. I had been tossing around the idea of going to
Anime Central with some friends from school, but then I remembered that
Eric and I had something else to do.
We overhauled the computer lab at
Luther East High School in Lansing IL. Eric replaced the old mix of PC AT computers with PXE booting diskless workstations. I replaced the Ethernet wiring and updated the terminal server. We wanted to take pictures, but could not find a digital camera.
There is still one 10-Mbit Ethernet hub that we need to replace. Fortunately, it only has to support basic file and print users. The minimum link in our
K12LTSP network is a BayStack 303 that serves twenty diskless X-Terminals.
The school is connected to The Internet over a DSL connection. Web surfing in the lab is pretty quick even when shared thanks to a
Squid proxy. Content filtering and monitoring is done with
SquidGuard.
We probably have two more weekends of work ahead before the school network environment is up to an acceptable level.
Dr. Menuge in Kansas
Dr. Angus Menuge recently spoke in Kansas.
You can listen to his speech in the following formats:
ogg (19Mb) or
mp3 (7.4Mb)
The audio was extracted from the recordings provided by
audible.com. I believe that my posting here is protected under fair use of a government hearing.
You can read his written testimony
here (as a PDF) or on the CUW
CS web site (as a DOC.)
I will eventually post some comments on his speech and the online reactions to it.
My first final of the season, CSC 300 with Dr. Menuge, was this morning. My grade in this class will be either reasonable or horrid. I'm not sure which right now. I understand the ideas well enough, but my C++ skill is rather lacking.
I often whine about being forced to use C++ when there are much better languages. I really need to shut up and start learning.
Sometime I will write a bit about Dr. Menuge. He rocks.
So, the big school project is due later today. It has occupied all of my free time since the middle of last week.
Staying up late and working on the same project can get old, so I went for a little walk.
There is a paved bike trail / jogging path that runs behind my apartment, so I walked a block or so out and back. The path was rather disturbing at night. There is dense brush along one side and a ditch that will be filled with reeds on the other. The path bends constantly, so you can't see very far ahead or behind. It even runs through a semi-industrial area. Does it sound bad yet? The risk of use would keep me away if the crime rate around here was anything to be worried about. At least the direction I went was well lighted. The other way was without illumination.
October by Evanescence is beautiful.
Well, I should get back to writing Python/Tkinter for this project.
