Jon's Notes
Yay for old hardware and mod_perl
I just set apache so that is uses mod_perl in the Movable Type directory. Enabling mod_perl make a huge difference in speed, logging in to MT now takes three seconds down from the ten seconds that it took without mod_perl.
The combination of
Sun hardware and open source software continues to impress me. This
SPARCstation LX with
NetBSD has thus far been able to run anything I throw at it. It is currently running Apache, mod_perl, PHP, and PostgreSQL with occasional interactive use via SSH. While not the fastest or newest computer I have it is by far the most stable with an uptime of: "
3:32AM up 173 days, 12:01, 1 user, load averages: 0.13, 0.19, 0.23". Not bad for a
10 year old computer.
Busy day
Elections for my
4-H club were held today. I ran for president and lost to J. D. Greving. Last year he said he would not run this year, go figure. They also had the really little kids vote even though they do not participate in the business meetings. I think that I will keep my involvement with this club to a minimum this year and instead focus on the county 4-H web project.
David West came home with us after 4-H and we played Empire Earth after trying unsuccessfully to get crossfire running.
7:17 club was interesting as always. Lately it seems like it gets a little wilder each time. Hopefully we will be meeting at the mission next week. Head had a little budda thet he set up inside a little cardboard temple on a table so that it was looking over our meeting which was vaguely disturbing. When we meet at the mission things seem to go better and there is much more room then at Jim's house.
Visit to Concordia University Wisconson
Yesterday I spent the night at Concordia University Wisconson (Mequon)
I like CUW and hope that I can attend college there.
They have a
ACM chapter and UNIX users group. Their people do not have the cloud of sadness that people at ISU and UIUC have.
Free laundry :-)
Their coursework appears to be in good shape. Their students seemed to like all professors except one.
4-H, Fire, and Fun
This evening David, Johanna, and I went to the 4-H federation meeting / volunteer pledge card burning.
There was no federation meeting, we met but did not take care of any business. The bit about pledge card burning is due to some scheme of our governor's wife who wants Illinois to be the state with the most volunteer hours. If you volunteered for all the hours that you pledged you get to burn your pledge card. We also played some games. Unlike many of the games we play at 4-H meetings these were halfway decent. We went on a scavenger hunt and attempted to solve a human knot. To wrap things up we went on a hay wagon ride through a corn field and along a creek. Supposedly there were coyotes around. Then, to top it all off we got home we discovered that Mom had all the house keys so Dad had been sitting in the van with the rest of the family for two hours.
