Weekend
This past weekend was intense. I had been tossing around the idea of going to
Anime Central with some friends from school, but then I remembered that
Eric and I had something else to do.
We overhauled the computer lab at
Luther East High School in Lansing IL. Eric replaced the old mix of PC AT computers with PXE booting diskless workstations. I replaced the Ethernet wiring and updated the terminal server. We wanted to take pictures, but could not find a digital camera.
There is still one 10-Mbit Ethernet hub that we need to replace. Fortunately, it only has to support basic file and print users. The minimum link in our
K12LTSP network is a BayStack 303 that serves twenty diskless X-Terminals.
The school is connected to The Internet over a DSL connection. Web surfing in the lab is pretty quick even when shared thanks to a
Squid proxy. Content filtering and monitoring is done with
SquidGuard.
We probably have two more weekends of work ahead before the school network environment is up to an acceptable level.
